RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former “American Idol” runner-up Clay Aiken is a father. The 29-year-old crooner from Raleigh announced the birth of Parker Foster Aiken on his Web site’s blog Friday “No hyphens. One first name,” he wrote. “One middle name. One last name.”Aiken’s mother, Faye, told Raleigh TV station WRAL the child was born in North Carolina. Aiken was a favorite of fans during the second season of “American Idol,” where he finished second to Ruben Studdard. His album “Measure of a Man” went double platinum in 2003, and he made his Broadway debut this spring in “Monty Python’s Spamalot.” MORE.

There isn’t much on the Top 40 charts these days that sounds anything like Amanda Overmyer. Apparently, there’s a good reason for that. Overmyer became the second of the 12 finalists voted off “American Idol” on Wednesday. The “rock and roll nurse,” as Randy Jackson called her, had one of the most memorable personalities among the contestants, but her song choices didn’t connect with the viewers. More.

Not only did Simon Cowell acknowledge that American singers were better than the Brits, a response to a viewer question that may well cost him any chance at knighthood, the judges also thought the voters got the bottom three right when they placed Syesha Mercado, Kristy Lee Cook and David Hernandez in danger. Getting voted off on “American Idol” is never a fun experience, but the last of the three semifinal rounds is always particularly cruel. Each of the four contestants voted off the show on Thursday was one week away from being one of the 12 finalists. The “American Idol” guys sang songs from the ‘70s on Tuesday’s show, and it was one of those nights where the judges seemed to grade on a curve. Much was expected from those who had succeeded last week, which meant that Michael Johns and Jason Castro had to be content with lukewarm praise even though they were still among the top performers.
